2006-2007 Meetings

May 23, 2007 -

  1. We will be meeting on June 12-14 for In-Service.
  2. (AS & MF) Have you completed your budget for next year?
  3. Do you have any data or observations that would point us toward student achievement, organizational and staff development goals for next year?
  4. Do you have any issues or concerns with regard to online grading that will be used in October?
  5. Next year's preliminary enrollment figures are in. It looks like BA has 2 accounting, 3 applied I, and 1 applied II/III while LM has 1 applied I & 2 8th Comp.
  6. Test out my forum.
  7. Discuss the use of free, web-based applications such as Google Apps (Docs & Spreadsheets wiki; wiki, review), FlySuite, Glide Effortless, and ThinkFree Office. What role can they play in our curriculum or dep't business?
  8. Discuss the use of OpenOffice (website) as well as saving files in OpenDocument (ODF) file format (file extensions .odt & .ods). Review the differences between text, RTF, and proprietary formats such as .doc and .pdf formats.
  9. Do you have any guest speakers or field trips to add to this list? (MF going to WITF in May, GoggleWorks in Mar, ??)
  10. Review where we are on the curriculum review cycle. CM needs to ask SR for clarification.
  11. CM will invite J Clauss to a future meeting to demonstrate how to use the white boards

  2. Requisitions for anything to be ordered for the beginning of the school year are due to BH by Apr 30. All tech ed concerns & req'ns are supposed to go through me now. CM will need these requisitions by our next dept meeting on Apr 25.

Mon Mar. 26, 2007 -

Feb. 28, 2007 -

  1. Beginning Mar 14, we will be meeting with the Math Dept on the 2nd Wed of ea month to learn some basic strategies from Learning Focus Schools. Someone will be presenting one topic (e.g. essential questions, graphic organizers) each month.
  2. There may be no Spring Break next year. Don't make vacation plans.
  3. Discuss having summer in-service flex days on June 12-14.
  4. Discuss the "disconnect" between exam grades and quarter grades. Review the grade summary sheets from BH.

Jan. 24, 2007 -

  1. Flex day proposal form is due to BH by Jan 25 so he can forward it to SR by Jan 26. We will be meeting on June 26-28 for our three days.
  2. Proposals for Summer Spartan Academy (5-7 grade) were due by Jan 22 (e.g. chess, VB, website development, game programming). MF is running two video camps.
  3. Next year we may have the opportunity to teach summer school classes. Proposals or willingness for teaching a summer school class (approx $1600 pay) this summer were forwarded to Mr Babb in the last month. Two teachers could split the course which would meet every day except July 4 between late June & late July (24 daily classes for 1 1/2 hr each day). Examples in our dep't include courses that 10 or more students might fail such as Applied Computers I.
  4. We need to recommend students for course selection. Remember that EVERY STUDENT needs to be recommended for a follow up course and this list needs to be turned in.

  1. Firm up summer flex day ideas so that CM can submit them for approval in Dec. (such as FinalCutPro, iMovie, iLife, Flash, Dreamweaver, software that BA wants to use for making computer application tutorials, burning DVD's, MacOS tips, ExamView, Moodle, podcast, Wiki, lab troubleshooting, small wood project, etc.)

Nov. 29, 2006 - excused: MF, LM

  1. Does anyone need to write a curriculum next summer? CM should have submitted the form by Nov. 15.
  2. We will be meeting on the 2nd Wed of ea month or some other time by arrangement (Per 2?) to analyze our midterm exams especially BA & LM for Applied I. CM has an analysis form for you to use to analyze your midterm exam.
  3. Please see the top of this web page for meeting dates and put them on your schedule so I don't need to remind you about them.
  4. CM will need to turn in copies of your midterm & final exams this year & forward them to BH.
  5. Any new course descriptions? They should be submitted to Betty ASAP.
  6. Discuss general state of discipline in the school. The dep't chairs will be discussing our concerns with BH & CB.
  7. Must take attendance at fire drills
  8. Keep doors locked at all times.

Aug 23, 2006:

  1. Discuss our 5 department goals for 2006-07

    - learn to use the new available technologies (to support our teaching endeavors and student learning opportunities). These technologies include the new VOIP phone system, the new gradebook, VPN, the new labs in 202, 406, & 407, our new hand in and drop box network folders.
    - identify and communicate our most effective uses of technologies in the classroom with each other. We will share ideas, techniques, and lesson plans with each other.
    - build an archive of "How It's Used in the Real World" artifacts to be shared with students in future years. This may include electronic files such as Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, computer programs, layered Photoshop files, multimedia files, etc that have been given to us by workers in industry.
    - integrate computer ethics formally and informally into our curriculum and daily teaching.
    - bring guest lecturers into the classroom and arrange field trips.


  2. Review department home page and submit changes to Mike Cawley.
  3. Review summer flex days.
  4. Does everyone have a copy of the curriculum for the courses they are teaching?
  5. Update your teaching schedule.
  6. Textbook inventory - BA (? Excel; ? Word; ? Access, ? Dreamweaver), LM (? Excel; ? Word; ? Access), CM (? VB; ? CCE; ? Big Java)
  7. (BA, LM, CM) Discuss the format, content, and delivery issues of the Applied I Course-by-Credit exam. As long as a student has an A in 8th grade Word Processing and the instructor's approval, they should be able to take the exam by arrangement.
