Room 202/Computer Science Tech Needs
As of 7/26/2011 - Ackerman/Ritter/Minich don't have access or shortcut at least to our Handout folders, Ackerman/Farrara/Ritter would like scratch.mit.edu installed on their laptops, Firefox needs the Flash plugin in Room 202, Minich's laptop doesn't have Android SDK or a number of other things that he needs ASAP to do summer prep, Minich's desktop in 202 doesnt seem to have the image that he fine-tuned with Matt M several weeks ago
- We would like programming students to be able to use Eclipse on computers in the library or general computer lab from USB flash drives if not from the machines' hard drives. Eclipse should be on the "valid application list" for Mac & Windows computers.
- Only one of the 4 ports behind my teacher desk in Room 202 is active though a few years ago at least 2 were active. Please enable more than one so I can plug in more than one computer to that set of jacks.
- ABTutor should work in Minich, Ackerman & Ritter's classrooms (202, 406 & 407)
- Are the paths to student files below accurate so Computer Dept teachers can map network drive labels to them?
- \\mentu\SecHomes\GY2014
- \\osiris\SecHomes\GY2013
- \\mentu\SecHomes\GY2012
- \\osiris\SecHomes\GY2011
- Applications for student computers in Room 202
- How to export wiki & blog at wiki.wyoarea.org & eschoolbook for backup and safe-keeping? Is there any way for a teacher to efficiently archive grades & assignment info (descriptions & student grades) from eschoolbook from year to year?
Minich's Teacher Computer
- make sure that email attachments, downloaded files, etc are not blocked as read-only copies. If necessary, open the Run command and type "gpedit.msc" to edit the User Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Attachment Manager. Enable the "Do not preserve zone information in file attachments" setting.
- My laptop needs to be able to use FTP (via Dreamweaver) when connected thru wireless & wired connection especially to ftp.minich.com. I need to add the "UserAgent" for FTP wireless or something?
- Applications for Minich's laptop
- VPN client
- FTP client
- Visual Studio 2010 (Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual C#) using the school's MSDNAA license
- Android SDK ( http://developer.android.com/sdk )
- "Eclipse IDE for Java Developers" at http://www.eclipse.org/downloads
- Android ADT plug-in for Eclipse (see objective #3 at http://minich.com/education/wyo/softwaredevelopment/lecture_notes/android_app_development.php or better yet ask for my help to install and test if it actually works right or not). For help on setting up the AVD see http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/avd.html For help on setting up a PC's environment variables while setting the path for the AVD, see http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home/ehchua/programming/android/Android_HowTo.html & http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3109473/moving-default-avd-configuration-folder-android
- Google's Android AppInventor ( http://appinventor.googlelabs.com/learn/setup ) - I believe my permissions allowed me to install this this year
- latest version of Java (from java.com version 6?)
- latest version of Flash player/plugin
- MS Office 2010 (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) - make sure it is "activated" using your admin password
- latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, & Google Chrome browsers with home page set to http://www.minich.com/education/wyo & default search toolbar to Google
- Adobe CS3 Suite (must include Dreamweaver & Fireworks but Photoshop and Flash would be nice as well)
- Audacity
- GIMP
- CutePDF Writer (freeware from cutepdf.com) so that it's installed as a printer. If you insist on using Adobe Acrobat Pro's pdf printer then please turn off the auto-preview option that is turned on by default. Go to the Adobe PDF printer Properties page, click the Adobe PDF Settings tab & uncheck the "View Adobe PDF results" checkbox
- Scratch from http://scratch.mit.edu/download (my permissions allow me to install this to my documents Home directory though)
- Note that the following software will be more necessary on my teacher desktop computer in Room 202 and probably don't need to be installed on my laptop:
- Bamboo, the Wacom Drawing tablet software (I have this CD in my classroom)
- Camtasia Studio software that includes SnagIt (I have this CD in my classroom)
