Dickinson College Field Trip on April, Friday 7
Once again, Mr. Krow's AP Statistics and Mr. Minich's AP Computer Science classes will be visiting Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA (Mr. Minich's hometown about 1 hour to the west.) This annual trip gives students the opportunity to take a close look at a small, prestigious liberal arts college similar to colleges such as Albright, Swarthmore, and Haverford. Yes, students can and do major in fields like mathematics and computer science at liberal arts colleges while receiving a well-rounded classical college education. If you choose, you can be very well-prepared to enter the work force or attend graduate school with a bachelor's degree from schools such as Dickinson.
Mr. Minich's students will be attending Prof. Braught's CS 132 lecture from 10-11 am on object-oriented design, polymorphism, and abstract classes. CS 132 is an introductory course for CS majors taught with Java. Please be prepared to ask sincere questions and to contribute when appropriate. Remember that you are representing Mr. Minich, who takes his job as a CS educator quite seriously, and Prof. Braught is his respected friend.
Mr. Krow's students will be meeting with Prof. Rossman, the author of their AP Statistics textbook, and taking part in interactive statistics exercises. All students will be attending a question & answer session with Prof. Rossman, the former Mathematics Department Chair. Please take advantage of the chance to ask a tenured, distinguished professor questions on college selection, choice of majors, and mathematics.
All students will be taking a guided tour of the Dickinson campus as well. We will visit the Holland Student Union Building, the newly renovated, state-of-the-art library, the athletic facilities, a college dorm, as well as other buildings. Take note of the character of the Dickinson college campus which is different from university campuses such as Penn State and Lehigh and very different from city university campuses such as Drexel, Penn, and Carnegie Mellon. Different people have different tastes and you really need to see various campuses in order to decide what kind of college you would like to attend.
You will be able to eat lunch at the Dickinson dining facilities or local restaurants (pizza shops, Subway, etc.). Bring $5-10 for lunch and incidentals. Bring a pencil, good questions to ask the students and professors, and the desire to gather insight from this college visit. Do NOT bring walkmen, electronic games, cocky attitudes, valuables, or uncomfortable or excessive clothing. Only bring food if packing your lunch. You will not be permitted to eat food on the bus or outside of our lunch hour. Mr. Krow and Mr. Minich will not accept less than perfect behavior from any student on the bus or on campus.
Please explore the links below in order to take full advantage of the trip. Feel free to e-mail the Wyomissing alumni who currently attend Dickinson.
