2009) A consortium of government and private organizations have established the US Cyber Challenge, an initiative that seeks to find
10,000 people with the potential to become the cyber security leaders of the future. The program will identify individuals who demonstrate skills that will allow them to the top of the cyber security talent pool through three national competitions: the CyberPatriot Defense Competition, the DC3 Digital Forensics Competition, and the NetWars Capture the Flag
Competition.  The field will be winnowed down, and those who demonstrate skill in the challenges are invited to attend cyber camps
at colleges around the country and participate in other national challenges.  Those who demonstrate extraordinary talent and skill will
be eligible to compete for scholarships and internships.  Members of the consortium include the the Center for Strategic and International
Studies (CSIS), US Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center,  the Air Force Association, and the SANS Institute.  The state of Delaware has
announced a state-wide competition.  Senator Liebreman met with the young winner of the first round of NetWars.


Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair

regional competition:

Approx. April 5, 2002 from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm at the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU)

First through third place winners each receive a plaque and entry into the state competition. First place winners' school receives an engraved traveling trophy. Questions can be directed to Mr. Steve Spengler at 610-987-8506 or stespe@berksiu.k12.pa.us.

All registration for the BCIU regional event must take place online at www.pacomputerfair.org by early March 2002. See Mr. Minich ASAP if you are interested in entering this competition since only one project per category (see list above) may be entered. Students may work in groups.

Berks County Student Technology Showcase

Sunday, April 21, 2002 at Fairgrounds Square Mall (11 am - 5 pm)

You may present a computer project that you have made for school. You will need to supply your own computer or arrange with the school district to use its computer. You will also need to attend the Showcase for several hours to demonstrate your project. Showcase project ideas include: animation, AutoCAD projects, databases, spreadsheets, word-processed documents, computer programming, desktop-published materials including student newspapers, digital photography, video yearbooks, graphics arts designs, HyperStudio projects, PowerPoint presentations, Web site designs. This showcase is open to students in all grade levels. Students must bring their own or a school's computer. At least one teacher must agree to chaperone and 5 or more students from each school are expected to attend with projects.

Siemens Westinghouse Science & Technology Competition

The Siemens Westinghouse Science & Technology Competition is a very well known competition where the first through sixth place team and individual winners earn $100000, $50000, $40000, $30000, $20000, and $10000 scholarships. You can also win an expense paid trip to Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, MIT, Notre Dame, UC Berkeley, or UT Austin. Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Competition

Entry deadline is Feb. 2, 2000. You can win a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond or a digital camera by creating a Web site that explains future technology. ThinkQuest Internet Challenge

Win college scholarships from $5,000 to $25,0000!!!

The ThinkQuest Internet Challenge is an international program for students ages 12 through 19 that encourages them to use the Internet to create information-rich Web-based educational tools and materials. Students form teams with their colleagues from around the world and are mentored by teachers or other adult coaches. In the running for scholarships and awards totaling more than $1 million, student participants learn collaboration, leadership and critical thinking skills that help raise their level of education and technological expertise. Awards are handed out across five categories: Arts & Literature, Science & Mathematics, Social Sciences, Sports & Health and Interdisciplinary. ArsDigita Foundation Contest

An Oley High School team of students won $5,000 in the team category during 1999-2000 plus an all-expenses paid trip to MIT University with their Oley Valley Info Center that became part of their Open Weasel Portal Toolkit. See this link for instructions on entering the contest.
