Newsletter Assignment
Every computer student must contribute an article to each quarterly class newsletter. The topic of the article may be:
of computer science-related general interest (see this page for even more ideas),
an essay reacting to a current events topic related to computer technology,
an explanation and/or description of a class assignment or topic,
a summary of a survey that you conducted on a computer science-related question(s),
an interview of someone who uses computer technology in the workplace,
a career choice or college major related to computers,
or any other topic approved by the teacher
The article must be at least 150 words, but should not be longer than 300 words. Note that Microsoft Word has a Word Count function under the Tools/Word Count menu option. You must use 10-Point Arial font for the body of the article and standard paragraph/tab/margin settings. Make sure that the article is single-spaced. Give the article a meaningful title (in 14-Point Arial) and center the title. Include and center "by John D" (10-point Arial) on the line after the title (but substitute YOUR name and last initial there). Skip a blank line before the first line of the body of the article. For example,
Bill Gates, Founder of Microsoft Once upon a time there was a brilliant man with a vision. He went to Harvard, dropped out, and became the richest man in the world with a fortune of over $90 billion. |
You must save the file as "ArticleQuarter1JohnD" in your "Misc" network folder (e.g. VB files/Misc or Java files/Misc). Replace "JohnD" in the example filename with YOUR first name and last initial and type the appropriate quarter number. You must also turn in a printed copy as well. The due date for each marking period's article is the fifth school day before the end of the marking period.
You must cite all web pages used as references by including each web page URL address below your article. If you use a printed source such as a newspaper or magazine article, you must staple a copy of that article to your typed article. Failure to cite your references will automatically result in a zero grade and possible additional punishment.
You will be graded on content, spelling, grammar, and how well you follow these specifications. Remember to use the spell checker in MS Word. Failure to submit an article will result in a zero. If you are unsure that your topic fits the suggestions above, see Mr. Minich BEFORE you write the article.
